| | portishead. | ] | "Can I call you back? American Idol is on." I am playing second fiddle to a mean British man, a former Laker girl, and a man who refers to everyone as "dawg". . . . I called work this morning and said I was burnt out on work and that I needed to work from home today which as we all know is secret code for "lounging around the house in my pajamas". And that is precisely what I did. I also had a luscious one hour massage to help with the horrific back and shoulder pain as a result of lugging a monstrously heavy box from Grand Central to the 1st Ave. & 20th St. to 131st St. In the end, I do feel better and a nice lady touched my bum. . . . New York was stellar, unlike this post. |

I'll be playing grown up in New York all weekend at an "artists presenters conference". Okay, so I won't actually be going IN the conference, but I'll be running around Manhattan and Brooklyn 'til Tuesday smoking French cigarettes and discussing how performance arty the performance art was. It's all so very Po-Mo. Because its hard being a Chinese-American in a post 9/11 United States. Really. Can't you feel my pain in the way I juggle these chainsaws that are on fire?
Have I ever told you how I find the assertion that a piece of literature or a work of art or a performance piece is "postmodern" completely assinine? Because I do. By most definitions, any work of literature, art, architecture created after the 19th century could fit into post-modernism. I once overhead a late-night philosopher at Denny's say, "That was so post-post-modern." Excuse me? I'm post-modern, you're post-modern, we're all post-modern. And hell, while we're at it, we're all existential too... I digress.
Post-modern art is a reaction to modernist theory, by reintroduction of classical principles. Is that like nu-metal? Or new new wave? Or just a colorful variation of irony?
You know, all the books I've read discussing post-modernism can only give a definition in terms of modernism. I have trouble with the idea of defining a word with a root of the same word. I need more substance than, "Postmodernism is defined by NOT modernism."
"The word 'postmodernism' has very little content of its own. It is a sign; a pointer in reference to other concepts, like the word 'north'. It says simply that the previous cultural and philosophic synthesis, 'modernism', is at an end, and something else is emerging to take its place. Because no one knows yet precisely the shape of the future, it is convenient to speak of postmodernism: the force which will follow modernism. The words 'postmodernism' and 'emerging culture' are substantially interchangeable." (from Threshold of the Future by Michael Riddell) (2)
 Art.
 Not about art.
You know, I don't have any conclusive statements about this, but maybe a visit to the Museum of Modern Art on Friday will help me clear up this postmodernism business. Probably not, but at least I'll get to look at the nifty art. (Not about art. Or as the Canadians say, "Not aboot art.")
For now, my conclusions on post-modernism remain inconclusive. ("That in itself is postmodern?" -AS) . . . Addedendum . . . To call at 7:03 and on your machine I slur a plea for you to come home. But I know it's too late, I should have given you a reason to stay. . . . 4:30 am phone calls and the conversations that follow don't startle me. You already knew my answer before you thought to ask the question. All the vague allusions to a life of possibilities are nothing more than false hope to keep you from questioning the decisions you made when the life you chose doesn't seem as bright as it seemed at the start. . . . You were correct though, I am one hilarious fucker. . . . This is fact not fiction, for the first time in years. |
